Tips to help keep your children safe from electricity at home.

Children are the biggest joys imaginable. Their purity and curious nature rekindle our own childhoods, however curiosity could lead to some electrical dangers at home.

It’s of top priority to teach children the dangers of electricity from a young age, preferably around the age of four.
It can be difficult to teach and educate young children on the severe dangers of electricity, so we’ve shared some valuable tips to keep them safe at home.

Science

A favourite subject for many at school, Science plays a great role in educating children on the power of electricity. An ideal destination to learn about the beauty and hazards of electricity is the London Science Museum. Children are able to explore and see first-hand how electricity works, its use to us all and how to stay safe.

Continued Education

The education on electricity doesn’t stop with a visit to the London Science Museum, reading more on electricity and familiarising children with dangerous household appliances and teach them to never touch or use them without the supervision of their parents.

Strong Stance

A way to ensure kids keep safe is to form a list of rules to follow. These should include:
  • Don’t touch any electrical cords or sockets
  • Always ask for parents’ permission and help if they want to use electrical items
  • Don’t touch anything electrical with wet hands
  • Not to collect any balls from where electrical goods are, for them to call parents.
  • Ensure the kids remember and repeat the rules.

Authority

Children love to be given a perceived adult responsibility, for this reason it’s a good idea to create an Electrical Safety Ambassador along with a shiny badge and notebook. Awarding this to children who remember and abide by the rules would drill home the importance of electrical safety in a fun way.

Be the Leader

Children are sponges, they’re at an age where they’re developing and forming characteristics and behaviours they see from people around them, so its vital parents set an example for children.

Precautions

Regardless of the rules and examples you as an adult set for children, their curious nature could attract them to going near electricity. It’s advisable to take extra precautions to ensure your children are safe. Here are some additional safety measures:
  • Put child-proof covers on sockets
  • Ensure cords aren’t untangled, keep them neat and tidy
  • Keep electrical goods away from children
  • Never keep bathroom electrical goods out in the open after usage, put them away in a safe place where kids can’t touch them.
  • Check for any damaged cords and replace them.
